In their book, The Business Playground, Dave Steward and Mark Simmons postulate that we can actually prepare our brains to think creatively. And it’s that creativity that helps us solve pesky business problems that so often get in the way of productivity and profitability. It seems that, when unencumbered by trying really hard to solve a problem, our unconscious minds can sort through all the things we have filed away in our brains and actually make connections between things that previously seemed unconnected, netting creative solutions to our problems.
When we concentrate too hard on solving a problem, we don’t give our minds the opportunity for one of those Aha! moments. So, next time the collective brains of your management team are deadlocked, suggest a communal distraction. Listening to music can help coordinate right-brain imagery with left-brain analysis. Aerobic exercise literally gets the blood flowing so new neural connections occur in the brain. Even playing games can get those subconscious thoughts bouncing around and lead to a conscious breakthrough and creative ideas.
