Hulu Hooping, The Next Big Craze PDF Print E-mail

Hulu, a website offering commercial-supported streaming video of popular TV shows introduced a new feature recently which foretells the future of TV advertising.

Viewers can now indicate whether a commercial shown during their program is relevant or not by clicking a button above their viewing screen. According to Eugene Wei, Hulu’s VP of Products, the choice of the word relevant is critical. Hulu doesn’t want to know if you like the commercial, they want to know if it’s relevant to you.

Based on your personal relevancy meter, Hulu will adjust which ads you see, creating a leap of value for the you and the advertiser. You see only commercials for things you have an interest in, and advertisers can ensure that the right people are getting their message. The final entity benefiting from this new feature is Hulu itself who can now charge more for putting the right ads in front of the right people. Genuis!

Viewers of Hulu are effectively opting in to the sales process, which should make it much easier for the seller and the buyer.
