- Above the fold- subject line and the first 2-3 sentences need to gain attention to get to the next level - 5 + 30 approach: tell the 5-second version of your story first then tell the 30-second version - Your opening sentence needs to be able to stand on its own - Having the link in the first paragraph improves click rate by 50% - When designing, use your graphics sparingly (they block the text by default) - If you place the unsubscribe link in the upper quadrant, you get more unsubscribes, but also fewer SPAM reports and vice versa - Analyzed teaser intro text with 1 or 2 links to "read more" - the average click-thru-rate for paragraphs with 1 link was 6.8% and the average click-thru-rate for paragraphs with 2 links was 8.57% - Make sure you stay CAN-SPAM compliant (always use a signature, address, phone and contact email address) - It is okay to advertise below the signature with links to Twitter, Facebook, your company blog, special offers, free demos and trials, etc. Betsy McElfresh, Copywriter.
